Details for the CPED Los Angeles Convening

For CPED members only. NOTE: Agenda & Pre-work located at the bottom of this page.

When:

October 22-24, 2008

We will start approximately Wed, Oct 22nd at 1:00pm PST and end at 2:00pm PST on Friday, Oct 24th.

Who:

We ask each CPED institution to send teams of two people—one faculty/administration and one graduate student. It is preferable that the team members who have participated in Convenings thus far return but we understand if this is not possible.

Where:

University of Southern California, The Rossier School of Education

Highlights:

The conference will focus on linking the professional doctorate with leadership needs in the field. Four important components in developing an EDD program will serve as the basis for organizing the conference: core/foundation courses, inquiry courses, capstone/thematic dissertations, and organizational support/student advisement. Issues will be raised by faculty involved in the development of the USC program followed by group and panel discussions by Carnegie participants. The focus is on how individual programs can deal with programmatic issues in developing the Ed.D.
Participants will have the opportunity to discuss various topics with area principals and superintendents. In addition, recent Ed.D graduates from the USC program will be available to share their experiences in the program. Key presentations will be made by Dean Karen Gallagher of the Rossier School of Education, a superintendent discussing her perceptions of the knowledge and skills needed by educational leaders of the future, and a district administrator discussing how district research needs can be related to capstone experiences in an Ed.D program.

Prework:

1.Defining Outcomes:  A primary task for CPED aims to identify outcomes in the three foci groups that could lead to Shulman's proposal for a "low stakes-high yield" assessment system for Ed.D. candidates in school leadership, clinical practice in teacher education, and organizational leadership. As a group, we seek to identify what candidates from Ed.D. programs should know, believe and be able to do in each of the three areas with an eventual attempt to describe levels of proficiency.
The October 2009 Convening pre-work will move us forward to reach the goal of identifying outcomes of our professional doctorate programs. The information that teams provide will be both a center for discussion as well as a foundation for developing a common assessment system.
By Wednesday, October 15th, please outline the identified outcomes for your program with the goal of having outcomes identified for the following components of your program. Create a poster for display at the convening AND attach a copy of your poster to your institutional page on the CPED website.

  1. Core/foundation courses
  2. Inquiry courses
  3. Capstone experiences
  4. Internship experiences (or laboratories of practice)

2. Read Ed Schools in a Flat World by Dean Karen Symms Gallagher

3. Read Developing a New Ed.D Program in the Rossier School of Education at USC by David Marsh and Myron Dembo
