Framework for conversation with Tony Bryk

  • Response — There is a need for educational reform. Elements of a new partnership - triangle — university researchers, school practitioners, social entrepreneurs
  • How to transform educational practice?
  • Response — the current systems in place is not conducive to this approach, to developing systematic focus, practice, and evaluation.
  • Response — Article helped identity further steps to take (innovation).  Optimistic…h#8230; how can we make this happen? R & D
  • Social entrepreneurs
  • How do we keep graduate students engaged with the new R & D approach (capacity)?
  • What are the implications of our efforts?
  • Response — we need a robust evaluation system
  • Response — Organizations like Carnegie Foundation plays an important role.  It takes persistence, energy and funds to make the changes sought.  It will take a lot of movement within schools, organizations, etc. to make the changes sought on a national level.  Hopes the new administration can help facilitate the cooperation between organizations to make the changes needed.
  • What is missing is the intermediate institutions conduct much research…I#8230; Is there capacity of knowledge sharing.  Microsoft trying to figure out how to allow teachers, etc. to access information instantly, what role are universities playing or willing to play concerning this approach to access of information.
  • Faculty to need instigate the change needed. Increase research creativity
  • Innovation — British Initiative Education Action Zones- Little foundation for partnership, money was allocated yearly (funds limited). We need to think about the initiatives and the long-term goals and effects.
  • What’s the tolerance for the system for no effects?  How much money could the system tolerate for developing (something) before we know if it is effective?  Also, expressed concerns over the research used to influence decisions (quality of evidence).
  • Scale — large-scale engineering projects. Signature pedagogy… Bryk has some transformative ideas
  • Inclusion of schools for collaboration.  Purpose of EdD is to train school people to be collaborative, beyond how colleges have approached it in the past.
  • Need a unified vocabulary, principles underlying effective practices.  Shortcomings are not from a lack of research development, we need to deal with social and motivational aspects of schooling.  People from non-dominant groups seldom aspire or want to be in education and administration
  • Inclusion of the other 2 groups in meetings like CPED…r#8230; right now it is attended by university researchers.
  • Need to emphasize pedagogy.  How people are working on local areas and how to extend that to national and global levels.  How to make pedagogy applicable to local concerns and then to broader regional concerns?
  • Significance of language and culture — how it is emphasized or implicated in local areas.
  • Application — How do we ensure that research, results, application trickles beyond universities to a larger audience?
  • Money is an issue; CA is in a crisis. Obtaining funds, colleges are obtaining funds by expressing how education can meet the needs of the foundations giving funds.  This is because they are more apt to donate.  Colleges are not necessarily asking for funds that meet their direct needs because they are not likely to receive funds.
  • Change is needed in the way of doing business
  • Celebration of accomplishments, aim to synthesize the information on the posters and presentation
